Hardwood Floor Cleaning And Caring Ideas To Look For

A lot of research must be done before you contact any of your local flooring companies to have a hardwood floor installed in your home. You need to examine the prices, the various types of wood, and of course, the cleaning methods required to keep them looking nice. This type of thorough research is the best way to determine whether or not a hardwood floor will work for you. Let’s look at the cleaning aspect of it here, in order to paint a full picture of the amount of care required.

Don’t Use Too Much Water

Water and hardwood don’t mix well at all. While hardwood floors aren’t “alive” they are porous. This means that water can sink into them and become trapped. Over time, the trapped moisture will cause the wood to begin to crack and buckle. Remember this when you’re cleaning those floors. You don’t want to use too much water, and if you do end up doing this by accident, wipe it up as quickly as possible.

Furniture Glides and Spike Heels Should Be Avoided

These two things will definitely scratch your hardwood floors. Be careful when walking on the floor in spike heels, although it would be best if you just took your shoes off at the door. Also, furniture glide (domed devices that make it easy to move furniture around on the floor) can cause plenty of scratches as well. Just avoid them altogether.

Watch the Types of Cleaning Solutions That You Use

No matter what type of hardwood flooring you eventually choose, you should be aware that there are some cleaning solutions that can cause problems. For example, if your floor has a urethane finish, then you shouldn’t wax it. Doing this will leave behind a filmy residue. You also should avoid floor cleaners that contain ammonia, as well as oil soaps, since they can dull the floor’s finish. Instead, choose a floor cleaner that’s designed specifically for hardwood. You should be able to find one at one of your local flooring companies.

General Tips

Although the thought of cleaning your floor every day may make you wish that you chose a different type of flooring altogether, you’ll find that this is unavoidable. If you truly want to keep your hardwood floors looking nice, then you should sweep or vacuum them every day. Just make sure that the vacuum settings are correct. In addition, you should wash them at least once a week with the proper cleaning solution, and then soak up any excess moisture with a microfiber cloth.

Speaking of microfiber cloths, you need to keep some on hand in order to pick up spills before they have a chance to stain. Do not ever let stains sink into your hardwood floors, as they can be difficult to remove. This means that you need to stay vigilant!
Finally, don’t forget that your hardwood floors can be sanded and restained when necessary. You might find yourself doing this every five or ten years, depending on the wear and tear that they receive. Always keep in mind that home renovations can be costly but if you ever have plans to flip your house in the future this might give you a bucket load of savings.
