7 Upscale Home Decorating Tips for a Beautiful Home

Few of us are able to deny the special kind of beauty that model homes have. Some of the world’s most beautiful homes are practically landmarks.

But, it doesn’t require millions of dollars (or a 7500 square-foot house) in order to give your own home a taste of this look.

Not sure where to start? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.

Let’s take a look at everything you need to know about upscale home decorating.

1. Crown Molding

When decorating your home, small details often go a lot further than most people anticipate. Something to consider here is crown molding, which is a simple addition to a room that can drastically boost its beauty.

There are some things to keep in mind here when choosing what type you’d like for your home:

  • The wider the trim, the more of an impact it will have
  • You don’t need to spend hundreds or thousands– there are plastic models that you can paint over
  • You don’t have to add it to every room. Only the ones that experience the most use (master bedroom, living room, kitchen, etc.).

If your budget allows, you can incorporate other types of molding, too. High baseboard and column molding provide a similar effect to a home.

2. Window Treatments

No matter how nice the glass is, bare windows simply look out of place in a home that strives to incorporate beauty. So, you’re going to need to pick up some curtains to add a bit of character to them.

Material is important here, but you don’t have to stretch yourself thin. If silk drapes are too expensive, try linen or cotton material instead. Avoid polyester, though, as it doesn’t always have a quality appearance.

Depending on the design of the rest of your home, you may avoid curtains altogether. Bamboo or wood blinds can accomplish the same task.

3. Artwork

Unless a room in your home needs to have bare walls for some reason, it’s always a good idea to add artwork in order to fill up the empty space and add character.

It’s also easy to find great looking paintings and drawings that don’t cost too much money. Local art shows are a great place to start looking if this is something that interests you.

An alternative option includes family photos or even your own artwork or that of someone you know.

It’s important, though, to make sure the artwork you choose matches the color of your room and also isn’t so big that it becomes distracting.

4. Lighting

Lighting is something that’s often overlooked when people strive to decorate their homes. In reality, though, it plays a central role in accenting the room’s appearance.

Standard light fixtures only have one level of brightness, and it’s often one that isn’t particularly pleasant.

Ceiling lights, pendant lights, and even LED block lights can drastically improve a room’s appearance. You’ll be able to take things even further if you install a dimmer switch to control the level of the room’s ambiance.

5. Wood Flooring

It’s hard to go wrong with hardwood flooring. In fact, it almost always presents a more elegant appearance than carpet does.

This type of flooring also has the added bonus of providing extra value to your home, so you can consider the cost as more of an investment rather than purchase since you’ll make the money back later (and maybe even profit)!

For the most luxurious appearance, opt for darker colors when choosing the type of wood for your floors. If your room has too much open space, throw a rug or two down that has a quality design in order to tie the room together.

6. Color Goes a Long Way

Whether we’re aware of it or not, the color of a room can influence our mood.

For example, a light blue is perfect for a room that should be bright and calming, such as a nursery. A study or studio, however, is better suited by deeper hues like burgundy.

Unless your room’s design includes only neutral tones like black, white, and gray, avoid keeping the majority of your home’s walls white. This can easily lead to a bland, unfinished appearance.

Instead, choose a color palette for your entire home’s interior and stay true to it if you decide to paint your walls.

7. Accessorize

Part of making your home look like a model house is adding personalization.

Accenting your room with various accessories accomplished the same task that wearing a necklace or bracelet does. It adds character without being too distracting from the overall appearance.

The type of objects you should add will depend on the room’s purpose and atmosphere, but could include the following:

  • Area rugs
  • Houseplants
  • Personal items (such as books or photographs)
  • Instruments
  • Extra chairs (such as a leather recliner)
  • Lamps

The possibilities extend far beyond this list, though. In general, if an item would be useful in a room and isn’t too ‘loud’ in appearance, it’s most likely a good choice to use as an accent.
