Questions To Ask Before Moving

Moving can be really difficult and stressful. You have to not only decide on what neighborhood to live in – but you also have to make sure you like your new place and that you can afford it. There are so many different variables and it can make it less stressful if you ignore some of the fine print and small details.

However, you need to stay vigilant. Avoiding the stress now will just add to more stress further down the road.

In order to make your life easier, we have put together the top 6 questions that you need to ask before moving in order to make sure that you are getting the best deal and will live happily ever after in your new home.

The 6 Questions You Should Ask Before Moving

Before you move, you need to make sure that there are no surprises and that you are budgeting for everything. However, not all costs are transparent and up-front. Here’s what to ask.

#1 – Do I Need Renter’s Insurance?

Some landlords and complexes now require renters insurance in order for you to be a tenant at their property. Thankfully, renter’s insurance can be very affordable. However, it is still an extra cost that you need to factor in your budgeting for your new move. Be sure to ask if you need renter’s insurance early in the process. And if you do, here’s a guide on how to get renters insurance.

#2 –  How Much Will Utilities Be?

While this number will vary from month to month, it is important to ask this ahead of time. Utility cost can range widely from place to place – so you don’t want to be in a 12-month lease and stuck with a utility bill that is 4x over what you budgeted for. If they can give you a straightforward answer – move along. You don’t want to live in a property that is unfamiliar or not transparent with utility costs.

#3 – Is Parking or Internet Free?

There may be some free or cheap perks to living certain places that actually make it more affordable than some of your other choices – and vice versa. Be sure to look at extra fees such as parking, pet rent, internet, and things of that nature.

#4 – What Is The Deposit?

Make sure that you have enough cash on hand to pay for the first month plus the deposit. If you don’t, then that place isn’t going to work for you and your budget.

#5 – What Is There To Do In The Neighborhood?

If the representative you’re talking to can’t tell you any good qualities about the neighborhood and where to eat and shop – you may want to look elsewhere. Either they aren’t very involved in the area themselves, or it’s not a nice area to live in.

#6 – What Are The Amenities?

Sometimes, certain places have gyms, pools, parks, and laundry services that can make living there more affordable than a place that looks cheaper on paper – as you can do things like canceling your gym membership and laundry service.

#7 – What Type Of Property Do I Need?

When moving, your priorities might have changed in terms of what you’re looking for in a property. Whether it’s condos on the beach or an apartment in the city, it’s important to figure out what type of property you need.

There are lots of different types, so it’s worth considering what you need and what’s affordable for you and your household.
