How to Fix AC Problems: 5 Common Issues

When your air conditioner stops working properly, you likely notice it immediately. However, you may not know the cause or when it’s time to call a professional AC repair service.

Keep reading to learn some of the most common issues with your air conditioner and what you can do to fix them.

1. The Unit Runs Constantly

It’s normal for your AC to run more when it is hot outside. However, it should still switch off occasionally. Fixing an AC that doesn’t cycle off will help you protect internal components and keep your energy costs from increasing drastically.

Several issues may cause this problem. The first fix is to turn the thermostat fan off and see if the unit shuts off. If not, contact the professionals.

2. The AC Won’t Come On

Nothing is more frustrating than waking up in the morning to discover that your AC won’t come on. Even if you turn the temperature on your thermostat down, your AC still doesn’t switch on.

This can occur when a circuit breaker trips, due to loose wiring, or because of a faulty thermostat. You should not try to repair wiring issues on your own. Instead, call the professionals to help since they have the necessary equipment to diagnose potential electrical issues with your unit.

3. No Cool Air Being Produced

There are two ways that this issue may occur. You may notice your unit running but no air coming out of the ducts, or you may feel some air, but it isn’t cool.

A smart solution is to invest in regular tune-ups for your system, which will prevent this issue. While there are some situations where the cause is a tripped circuit breaker, it’s also possible that the belt is worn out and needs to be replaced. If refrigerant levels are low, this could impact your system’s cooling ability, too.

4. Hot Air Coming Out of the Vents

Is your AC producing hot air rather than cold air? No one wants to feel uncomfortably warm while inside their home. If you notice hot air coming out of the vents, the problem could be a dirty air filter, obstruction in the vents, or debris that causes the compressor to overheat.

It’s recommended that you replace your air filters every few months, which can help you prevent this issue. You should also invest in professional duct cleaning once per year.

5. Water or Refrigerant Leak

Most homeowners don’t know how to tell if there is a refrigerant leak since they usually occur in the coolant lines. However, if you see bright stains close to your unit, it signifies a problem. While you will likely notice some condensation on the outside of the unit, excess moisture signifies a water leak.

Don’t Wait to Call for Professional Service

If you notice one of the issues with your AC, you should call for professional service immediately. If you wait to do this, the issue will likely get worse and be even more expensive to repair.
