Getting to Know Melbourne, Florida: A Quiet, Picturesque Community

Melbourne, Florida, appeals to many retirees. You will find many of them walking along the sidewalks or biking if they’re still spry enough. However, you can also vacation there and not spend the money you would in Miami or Orlando.\

You can find Melbourne, Florida, vacation rentals located right on the water if that appeals. These rental prices won’t break the bank, and they come with many amenities.

Let’s learn more about this community right now.

The Basics

You will find Melbourne not far from Orlando to the southeast. More than 85,000 people live there. You’ll see retirement communities and lots of golf courses.

They call this the Space Coast because Nasa retains a presence there. On the Indian River Lagoon, you’ll come across the Eau Gallie Arts District. It has galleries and small shops where you can shop and grab some souvenirs.

You can also see some incredible period buildings around Melbourne. The Foosaner Art Museum attracts many tourists and locals. You might also visit the Rossetter House Museum and Gardens. The garden paths feature lots of exotic plant life, birds, and butterflies. The house looks just like it did way back in 1908.

What Else Can You Find There?

You might like checking out the Howard E. Futch Memorial Park right across the lagoon, within easy driving distance. You can walk around the park and sit on the benches to watch the wildlife. You can sometimes spot alligators in the canals, so keep your eyes open. They don’t usually bother humans, but they can get rambunctious occasionally.

The Brevard County Zoo also attracts many tourists each year. There, you can take a kayak tour through a simulated African habitat. You can observe the animals close enough to almost touch them, but you’re in no danger.

Other Possible Activities

Melbourne also has the Barrier Island Center, where you can visit the boardwalk. You might get some cotton candy or ice cream from a vendor, or you can play some video games at the local arcade. You can load up on T-shirts and swim trunks at rock-bottom prices.

Maybe you’d prefer to do some eating and drinking while you’re there. The hungry tourist will find many options, including some notable craft breweries.

Hell n’ Blazes Brewing Company is a definite winner, and Intracoastal Brewing Company is another fine option. They have a rotating menu with various house-made brews, and you can either sample some there or take them back to the hotel with you.

If you want seafood, The Chart House is hard to beat. The lobster tails there are fresh and succulent, or you might go with the surf and turf. This is a high-end establishment, so make sure you dress to impress.

Melbourne might not enjoy the fame that Orlando or Miami boasts, but you can still find hotel deals and plan a lovely vacation there. You can eat, drink, and enjoy cultural experiences as long as you like.
