Top Home Maintenance Jobs to Do Yearly That Often Get Forgotten About

Looking after a home, regardless of the style and size, can feel like a part-time job. There’s all the cleaning, organizing, and up-keep that takes place daily, and then on top of that, you may have that seemingly never-ending list of “to do” jobs. With all that going on, there are some basic maintenance jobs that can often get pushed to the side or forgotten about altogether. The problem is that many of these jobs are important to the safety and comfort of your home.

So with that in mind, we’ve gathered a few jobs that often get forgotten about that you will want to add to your yearly list.

Make Sure All Smoke Alarms Are Working

Here’s a job that is so important that it can prove to be a life-saving one. Checking to make sure all smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms work properly is something all homeowners need to do. Experts suggest doing this at the start of each season so that it acts as a reminder. If your alarms are hardwired into the house, they will still have a backup battery so you will want to replace it a few times a year so as not to take any chances.

It should also be noted that all of these alarms do have an expiry date, so this is something you should make note of.

Clean the Gutters

Drainage is something that every homeowner needs to be concerned about as you never want to give water the chance to collect and pool near the foundation. This will only lead to problems, which can be pretty extensive and expensive to repair.

The gutters on the home play a huge role in water drainage, so it’s wise to clean them out at least 1-2 times per year. It’s typically best to do this in spring to get rid of all the winter debris, and then again at the end of fall heading into winter. Even if you live in a climate that doesn’t experience four distinct seasons with falling leaves, debris can still build up so you still want to be sure you check them and clean them out.

Replace the Furnace Air Filter

Another job that homeowners often forget about is to replace their furnace air filters on a regular basis. For those who live in climates where the furnace is running most of the winter season, it’s a good idea to time it with the start of the new season. This ensures the furnace is able to run efficiently all season long. Because you can purchase furnace air filters online, it also makes it easy to grab a few at once so you’ve always got a back-up on hand.

While replacing the furnace filter, this can also be a great time to give the vents/air ducts in your home a quick cleaning with the vacuum.

Keeping the House Well-Maintained

Sure, these jobs may not seem like a big deal, but the fact is that each plays a vital role in the comfort, efficiency, and safety of your home.
